HEPATOBILIARY/GALLBLADDER SCAN

WHAT IS A NUCLEAR MEDICINE HEPATOBILIARY/GALLBLADDER SCAN?

A gallbladder scan is used to detect or assess the progression of gallbladder disease (cholecystitis), measure gallbladder function, and diagnose biliary duct obstructions. This specialized procedure utilizes a tiny amount of a radioactive material that, once absorbed into the gallbladder tissue, emits gamma radiation that can be detected by a scanner. The scanner can then produce detailed images so that your RAO radiologist can spot obstructions within the bile ducts caused by gallstones, tumors, hematomas, abscesses, cysts or gallbladder enlargement.

Because the amount of radioactive material used is small and remains active for only a few hours, it is considered safe for most patients, but it is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. People with concerns about exposure to radiation should consult with their RAO radiologist or their regular MD.
