November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Why is awareness so important? Because other cognitive issues can mimic Alzheimer’s disease – in fact, over 20% of Alzheimer’s cases are misdiagnosed. Cognitive decline has varying causes and each responds best to specific therapies. Happily, nearly all cases of cognitive decline can be managed, provided you get the correct diagnosis. However, not knowing the actual cause of decline can delay or even preclude proper treatment, allowing incapacity to worsen over time.
PET/CT testing can rule out Alzheimer’s disease as the cause of cognitive impairment. Being able to eliminate Alzheimer’s prevents being mislabeled and enables your doctor to focus on other causes so a correct diagnosis can be isolated, and appropriate management can begin.
